Career path:

I graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1979 and began my Naval career as the Main Propulsion Assistant operating the main engines and auxiliary engineering systems onboard USS Fox (CG 33), homeported in San Diego, CA.  I qualified as a Surface Warfare Officer during that assignment.

In 1983, I worked as Safety Officer at the Atlantic Underwater Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC), Andros Island, Bahamas. Following that, I attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, and graduated in 1986 with a Masters of Science degree in Meteorology and Oceanography.

From 1987-1990, I served as a meteorologist and Anti-submarine Warfare Services Officer at the Naval Oceanography Command Center, Rota, Spain.  In 1990, I was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) as ship’s Oceanographer and Officer of the Deck.  This was during the first Gulf War and we were launching air strikes to liberate Kuwait.

From 1992-1994, I was the Staff Oceanographer for Commander, Second Fleet embarked in USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20), Norfolk, Virginia.  Then I moved to Hawaii for three years to be the Operations Officer at the retional oceanography center in Pearl Harbor.  In 1998, I attended the College of Naval Warfare in Newport Rhode Island where I received a Masters of Arts Degree in Strategic Studies.

My next assigment was Commanding Officer of the Naval Atlantic Meteorology and Oceanography Facility, Jacksonville, FL, where I managed ten aviation and submarine support detachments from Keflavik Iceland to Guantanamo Bay Cuba.

 

Left - Captain Philip G Renaud, USN (Retired); Right - His Royal Highness Prince Khaled bin SultanOne of the most challenging jobs I had in the Navy was the Oceanography Officer Community Manager and Assignments Officer at the Navy Personnel Command in Millington, TN. I was responsible for assigning all Oceanography Officers to their next job. Finally, my last Navy assignment was Commanding Officer of the Naval Oceanographic Officer where I had responsibility for an organization of approximately 1200 personnel, seven Navy military oceanographic survey ships forward-deployed around the world, and a super-computer center.  During that challenging assignment, I managed to complete an MBA in Technology Management from the University of Phoenix through the distance learning program.

In April, 2004, I retired from active service and commenced employment as the Executive Director of the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation.

My hobbies include skiing, sailing, back-packing and, of course, scuba-diving.
